QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS ABOUT HYPNOSIS...
|
How
will I feel when I am hypnotized? |
|
Clients report a wonderful feeling of deep peace and overall wellness
and contentment when they emerge from hypnotic rest. There may be
a need to swallow more frequently and some people notice a slight
fluttering of their eyelids. This is likened to a period of REM
(rapid eye movement) in the dream state, when the creative mind
awakens. Hypnosis, though, is not sleep nor will you lose consciousness
in any way. At times there may be a feeling of lightness, a sensation
of pleasant buoyancy, or a relaxed heaviness. Breathing and heart
rate may slow down and the body temperature may drop slightly as
complete relaxation is achieved. A light blanket will be offered
for comfort. Hypnosis is a feeling of enjoyable relaxation and a
time of heightened focus toward achieving the desired goals.

Can
anyone be hypnotized? |
Anyone with reasonable
intelligence, imagination and attention span can be hypnotized. It requires
a motivation to change, a commitment to your own well being and a determination
to take charge of your life. No one can be hypnotized against
their will. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. It is much like
daydreaming and you have actually hypnotized yourself many times before.
If a client decides not to be hypnotized, for whatever reason, the desired
state of hypnosis will never be achieved. The act of making changes in
one’s life involves YOUR power. The hypnotist serves
only as a guide in that process.
|
| Will
I reveal any secrets or act in a way I would not act otherwise? |
NO. There is
no surrender of mind or control, and you will not do or say anything that
conflicts with your own personal standards of ethics and behavior. You
are never out of control, and you are aware of all suggestions given to
you and will remember what occurs.
|
|
Can
I get “stuck” in the state of hypnosis? |
NO. It would
be impossible to remain in a state of hypnosis beyond the time it is purposely
sustained. You are in control. Even if the hypnotist were to leave the
room, you would simply continue to rest for a few moments and would then
bring yourself out of hypnosis easily.

What
is Complementary Medical Hypnosis? |
Complimentary
Medical Hypnosis will normally require a licensed medical care provider’s
referral. Hypnosis has often proven itself to be a highly effective complementary
intervention in cases of challenging physical conditions such as burns,
cancer support, chronic fatigue, hypertension, fibromyalgia, IBS, migraines
and headaches, and pain management. It is also very effective in relieving
anxiety for surgery and medical/dental procedures and in enhancing post-surgical
recovery.
Hypnosis can create the all-important
positive attitude and expectation for healing by changing one’s perception
of the challenge through suggestion. Medical hypnosis can be contraindicated
if the client has a history of schizophrenia or other diagnosed disorders
such as bipolar, epilepsy and chronic depression. Especially in those,
and some other instances, certain factors and/or prescribed medications
can interfere with the effectiveness of hypnosis. So it is essential that
those conditions and medications be noted when calling for an appointment
and that a professional referral be received before treatment is begun.
A referral request can be sent or faxed from our office to your attending
medical care provider.

| If I
think I am falling asleep before my session tapes finish at night, am I
getting the full benefit of reinforcement ? |
|
Yes. It is essential
that the session tapes be listened to regularly to reinforce
the positive and beneficial suggestions given. The subconscious mind must
be "retrained" to accept new ways of thinking and the now desired perceptions.
Otherwise, there will be no long-lasting change. A revised habit of thinking
must be established and dominant cellular patterns and connections disrupted
as new ones are formed.
In fact, even though
you may think that you are falling asleep before the tape finishes at
night, you probably are not. You will not enter the Delta brain wave pattern
of sleep until about 30 minutes after you retire for the night. Your mind
must first relax into two other brain wave patterns - Alpha and Theta
activity - and it will take a short while to "wind down." The Alpha
and Theta brain wave patterns afford the time of greatest suggestibility,
as opposed to your waking Beta and Delta sleep patterns. Therefore, you
are listening to your new suggestions at exactly the optimum time, as
you move from waking consciousness into your most relaxed, creative and
hypersuggestible patterns. Even though you don't consciously hear what
is being said on the tape, your subconscious mind is listening intently
and carrying the new thoughts into your sleep and REM dream time. You
may even notice certain themes or insights in your dreams that relate
to these new suggestions. Journalling can be interesting and informative.

What is the cost of hypnosis sessions and how many sessions
are required to achieve the results I desire? |
The initial intake session will be approximately 1-1/2 hours,
with subsequent sessions lasting 1 hour. A complete client
history will be documented, goals set, and a session plan
determined. You may be asked to participate in suggestibility
evaluations that will help the hypnotist determine your
“learning style". The optimal number of sessions suggested to
accomplish the desired changes will vary, depending on the
goals. However, a signed commitment to a minimum of three
sessions, for a total cost of $350, will be required. This
will be payable after the first session, or if preferred in
two payments - one half after the first session and the
balance after the second session. Cash, checks and VISA/MC
are accepted.

at this time, most insurance carriers do not offer coverage for hypnosis
performed by Certified Hypnotherapists. You can, however, confirm any
available benefits with your insurance company by referencing “CPT” billing
code 90880.
